While it may seem as if the Great Oak has taken me I am still here. Problem is everyone wants my time. Work, yard, garage, family, Warcraft, GTA IV and now D&D. Yes that age old time waster has returned to my life. My daughters have begged me to play and I have finally conceded. Being a veteran of the 2nd edition having played the 80’s and most of 90’s. it seemed like a simple request. Also I had acquired the Core rules for 3.5 a few years back and liked how they and opened the classes, skills and feats, (also spent some time playing Neverwinter Nights) So feeling confident with my experience and feeling I had a little grasp on 3.5 it would be easy to pick it up this again.
Boy was I wrong. While some things are like riding a bike others are like riding a unicycle on a tightrope while juggling rattklesnakes. Yeah you did it once and was great but constant practice is required to stay good and to keep from getting bit. I had forgotten some of rules and the new 3.5 rules are just different enough multiply my confusion. Not that they have changed much in the game play. They have made them simpler not requiring charts as often. But for those of us that always check these charts to verify our math it is hard to relay sololy on are math. I have to unlearn some of what I’ve done in the past for these reasons.
Now before anyone points it out; Yes I am fully aware of 4th edition rules. I mistakenly signed up for D&D insider not realizing this. I used the character creator and became utterly confused when it start talking about powers and power cards… .well long story short, I figured out that is all apart of the new 4e rules
3.5 is where I stay – 4e seems to be making it more difficult with more complicated unneeded things like cards and the book prices are up once again. They seem to be offering more stuff to buy or subscribe to online for no other reason than to tie together what should already be complete. Each book constantly giving referance to other “not need” products but would “enhance” your current item you just bought”. Guess that is the destiny of all great things. When the creators die and leaves a vacancy that was once filled with creativity, imagination and fun. the company becomes a hollow shell without the soul that once gave it life. Those left behind only know how to keep it alive by filling that void with the only thing they understand – Money.
Sorry didn’t mean to end it on such a depressing note. Truth is I am happy to be playing D&D again. And IM still here even if I don’t blog or twitter as often as I use to. Now if you;; excuse me I gots to go find all the nuts I hid last winter.
